Make your own Wiccan, pagan themed "Witch's Magical book of Brews and Potions" with this cross stitch pattern and book binding tutorial pdf download. This is the perfect for pagans and wiccans who want to create their own magical apothecary journal or book of shadows. This download includes a step-by-step tutorial to bind your own blank book, along with a beautiful cross stitch pattern of the book's front, back, and spine cover designs and the inner cover motif. The "Witches Magical book of Brews and Potions" is perfect for recording your spells, rituals, and other magical musings.

The pattern is designed for 20 ct aida or 40 ct linen. (I have added calculations for 18 ct. see below)

IMPORTANT: if you are also stitching our Green Man "Book of Shadows" book, please be aware that it is designed to be stitched on 14 stitches per inch fabric where "Brews and Potions" is designed for 20 stitches per inch fabric. This is because I designed Brews and potions years ago when I could stitch on smaller fabric, but by the time I designed Green Man, my eyes could only handle 14 stitches per inch. The books will end up being the same size as each other only if Green Man is stitched on 14 stitches per inch, and Brews and Potions is stitched on 20 stitches per inch.

Your cross stitch charts will include suggested floss colors and will be in represented in symbols over colors. Regular full cross stitches, a few 3/4 stitches, back stitches, and a couple French knots are required.

Materials necessary for this book binding project using 20ct aida/40ct linen include:

-cardboard (or preferably mat board or thick chip board)
-an at least 9” x 13” inch piece of 40 ct. linen or
20 ct. cross stitch fabric
-embroidery floss
-16 sheets of 8 1/2 x 11” inch paper (will become 124 pg. book)
- ruler, craft knife, thick white glue (I prefer Aileen’s Tacky Glue).
-Twine or strong, thick thread, an awl (or a hammer and nail works), thin cotton batting or  wadding
-2 sheets of card stock (to print the digital inner paper file on) or your choice of heavy weight paper
-a 6 inch scrap of fabric (for making the spine)

This is for the patterns and tutorial only, not the finished project!

Have fun and happy stitching!

  • Sizing info

    If using 20ct/40ct fabric/linen the finished book measures approximately  4 3/4" x 5 3/4" inches.

*If you use 18ct fabric, the front and back measurements in the tutorial that call for 4.25 x 5" in 20ct, converts to 4.75" x 6.125" in 18ct. The spine measurement that was 5.5" x  0.625" for 20 ct. converts to 6.125" x 0.875" in 18ct. Because of this slightly larger size, the book fill pages wont be able to be made cleanly with 8 1/2 x 11 paper with no waste. You will need to cut  32 pieces of 8 1/2" x 11" paper to 9.5 x 6.125" so that when you fold it down the middle it will make 4.75 x 6.125" pages.  Get an at least 10" x 14" piece of 18ct fabric to do this project. Please be aware that the tutorial is for 20ct/40ct so please double check all your measurements very carefully if you choose to convert to 18ct.
